Expansion Information

Welcome to Sorority and Fraternity Life at the University of Kansas (KU)! As our community continues to grow and evolve, we are committed to fostering a vibrant and values-driven environment. Expansion provides an exciting opportunity to introduce new organizations that align with the mission and values of KU, while also meeting the diverse interests and needs of our student body. Through thoughtful, collaborative, and intentional efforts, we aim to strengthen the SFL experience by welcoming new chapters that will enrich our campus community and contribute positively to the long-standing tradition of leadership, service, scholarship, and belonging at KU.

Expansion Information

To ensure a healthy and thorough process for expansion that supports the growth of Greek letter organizations at the University of Kansas both organizationally and institutionally, there must be substantial evidence that the proposed organization will positively contribute to the KU Sorority and Fraternity Life (SFL) community. Additionally, the organization must demonstrate its ability to conduct itself in a manner consistent with University, Council, and SFL policies and procedures.

The University of Kansas is an open expansion campus, and Sorority and Fraternity Life (SFL) in the Office of Student Affairs, offers support to expanding and establishing organizations in a variety of ways. To begin the process, please reach out to our staff in order to best discuss your unique details and timeline. Our office supports expanding organizations on campus; however, your organization will not be an officially recognized member of the SFL community until you register as a student organization with the Student Engagement Center and complete the interest form and send supporting materials.

SFL believes in the autonomy of national organizations to manage their own expansion process. Our office will guide you through the university registration expectations and council requirements for membership. We are committed to providing expansion-focused support and transparent information based on previous and future expansion projects.

Organizations seeking to start a new or returning chapter must follow the process outlined in the Expansion Support document, which outlines the procedure and expectations. Information about council-related processes and requirements for student organization registration are not outlined in this document.

  • The organization must be affiliated with a parent organization that must show proof of 10 consecutive years of business operations and have undergraduate chapters (not colonies) at ten or more colleges/universities.
  • The organization must follow all student organization policies and procedures to become a registered student organization with the Student Engagement Center.
  • The organization must indicate when they intend to recruit students. This cannot occur in the same semester in which initial conversation to expand or return occurs.
  • Social greek organizations must report to a council.
